Chemoreception - Key terms



CHEMORECEPTION:

A physiological process whereby organisms respond to chemical stimuli.

GUSTATORY:

Of, or involving, the sense of taste ( gustation ).

INVERTEBRATE:

An animal without an internal skeleton.

NERVOUS SYSTEM:

A network, found in the bodies of all vertebrates, whose purpose is to receive and interpret stimuli and to transmit impulses. Parts of the nervous system include the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

OLFACTORY:

Of, or involving, the sense of smell ( olfaction ).

PHEROMONES:

Chemical substances produced and secreted by animals, which serve as stimuli for one or more behavioral responses on the part of other animals of the same species.

RECEPTOR:

A structure in the nerv ous system that receives specific stimuli and is affected in such a way that it sends particular messages to the brain. These messages are interpreted by the brain as sensations corresponding to the stimuli.

SENSE:

The means by which an organism (usually an animal) receives sig nals regarding physical or chemical changes or both in its environment. Some times called sensory reception or sensory perception.

STIMULUS:

Any phenomenon (i.e., an observable fact or event, such as an environmental change) that directly influences the activity or growth of a living organism.

VERTEBRATE:

An animal with an internal skeleton.
