Hi there

I was posed this question by a chemistry teacher awhile back.
What would happen to the concentration of hypochlorite in over time?
I know it decreases... but I don't know how to explain this in a chemical equation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 <--> CaCl(ClO) + H2O

Calcium hydroxide combines with chlorine to produce
calcium chloride hypochlorite (bleaching powder) and water.

Over time , water in the air forces the reverse reaction, liberating
chlorine gas (which you can smell).

There are other hypochlorite bleaching agents, but I think this is
the basic answer to your question.
