A lot of things are possible with contemporary science. There is even a way to make saltwater BURN by passing high frequency waves through it.
The reason most technologies don't reach the public is because of the cost to enable them.
Let's take your hydrogen powered car, for example. To enable cars to run on hydrogen and oxygen, you would need several things.
1) You would need a supply of hydrogen (exists from many many things, the most prominant right now is electrolysis of water to make both hydrogen and oxygen)
2) You would need a supply of oxygen (duh, the atmosphere - or electrolysis)
3) You would need an engine that uses those gases to power your car (this has existed for a long time)
4) You would need a way to get the hydrogen into your car (Exists! Cryogenically frozen hydrogen can be pumped and stored! Will cost tons of money, but it exists)
5) You would need a network of locations to refill your hydrogen supply (Does not exist - would cost billions upon billions of dollars to create)
#4 and #5 are where most of the problems occur. To create such a network, the consumer would have to pay for it with higher gas prices. Would you be willing to pay $7.50 per gallon just so you can say, "I am working to save the environment!" ? Most people wouldn't, so the change never occurs. |
