The moon is large and a great distance away from the Earth, which is why it appears to "follow" you, or even appear to stand still in the night sky. As you drive down the road, you pass trees, houses, and many objects. The objects are close to you and you can observe them as you pass them.

If you are driving down the same road and see a mountain in the distance, it will appear to be standing still, or even appear to move much more slowly then the objects closer in range as you pass it because the distance is much greater.
